How Camera Works ?

Photography is the result of combining several technical discoveries, relating to seeing an image and capturing the image. Photography has made possible, capturing movements which we can see and remember the time when it was clicked. The invention of the camera has changed the way people use to capture movements before.

Before the introduction of the camera, people use to draw and paint a memorable and important movement. This would take a long hour of thinking and bring the thoughts into pictures.

The introduction to the camera was a revolutionary invention done by Johann Zahn, who was a German author. The evolution of the camera from large dark boxes to modern small and modular cameras has been a long journey. we will aim our focus on a modern camera. We will understand the working of different components involved in a simple and best way possible. So the audience of this post is all the people who want to learn about the working of a camera in simple and understandable language. Let’s start the topic for today. 

First, we will understand the components of the camera which makes it work then we will understand the working of the camera step by step.

Black Box

A black box is a box where the light is captured to make an image. It consists of one hole in the front from where the light is projected inside of the box. One term which comes here in the picture is camera obscura. So this is not a difficult term to understand. It is a box that has a hole on the front with the lens which projects the outside visible thing to the screen inside it. So this camera obscura is an idea based on which black box is made. 

Lens

This is an important component in the development of the camera. The lens is used to bring together the rays of light which can be viewed on the screen. A lens is just a curved piece of glass or plastic. Its job is to take the beams of light bouncing off of an object i.e the visible thing and redirect them so they come together to form an image.

We have been talking about the screen in the lens and black box sections. So now let’s understand the screen used in the camera properly in this section. The screen used in the camera is a light-sensitive screen. This chemical light-sensitive screen is made up of silver coating on plastic. The new-age digital film uses an electronic light-detector chip to capture the light.

Aperture

Aperture is placed on the entry of hole in the black box. The importance of aperture is that it can control the amount of light entering in the black box and striking on the Film.

Prism

Everyone would be thinking that what is a need for prism in the camera. It is used to reflect the light in the part of the camera where we can see the picture before it is taken in the viewfinder. So we can view the photo which will be taken by the camera. This is done with the help of a prism.

We studied the basic and important components of the camera which were used earlier and also now in camera technology. There are still some new things which are added to a modern camera. We will study as it comes further.

Understanding the Working of Camera

After reading this you will understand every part of this camera system. So Starting with the black which contains the film in it. It can be seen as the black box is projecting the film from exposure. As the film is light sensitive it needs to be exposed only when we need to capture the photo.

What we can see from the image is that the black box helps to develop the image on the film which further goes to some process, which is not necessary to learn the process of image taking. But for the one enthusiast, I will explain this process. The lens on the opening of the black box taking into the light rays and performs the process of refraction(a phenomenon which we can see in the lens). The film captures this image and then the next process is to enlarge the image on a screen by changing the orientation of the paper.

So coming back to our topic the image formed on the photographic film when the light falls on it. The light rays coming from the reflection of objects are dispersed means not in the way the film needs to develop the image. So this thing of bringing together light rays is done by our Lens. The next thing we need to take care of is the amount of light which can fall on film this thing is handle by the aperture. So now we have the image of the film after all the above processes. The time of our film exposure is what we have not discussed about till now. This thing is handled by the shutter. A shutter is a device that allows light to pass for a determined period, exposing photographic film to light in order to capture a permanent image of a scene.

The viewfinder earpiece is the section of the camera from which we can see the picture which will the captured by the film. this viewfinder gets the image for us to see with the help the prism which we learned before. The self-timer is used to set the time after which the photo should click. The film rewind knob is used to adjust the photographic film. Flash hot shoe is used to add the accessory which can add flash when they are trying to get the image in the low light condition. Film advance lever which transports the film from one frame to the next on the roll of film. It is a feature that is mostly used by professional photographers.

So with this, we learned all the components as well as their use by the camera during the photography process. In the next paragraph, I am going to dedicate explaining some of the components of the digital camera. This is for the people who want to learn modern age technology. This process of capturing the image is still the same, only some of the components have been added to get better photographs.

The First thing which we get to see in the modern camera is the digital film instead of a chemical film. This film is the photosensitive sensors that capture the light. The only difference between this and the older chemical film is this doesn’t require to be changed once used as seen in the chemical film which requires a change once it captures photos in it. The digital camera provides us photos which we can see on our computers and mobile phones. This is done with the help of Image processing which changes the format of the image to the form like JPEG or JPG which are supported by our digital devices. This also helps us to store the image on the memory card already attached in the digital camera to store the captured image permanently. The viewfinder which we used in the old camera is used today also, but the digital LED screen is also added in the modern-day camera to check out the photo which we are going to take and also check the photos present on the camera’s memory card directly to the screen.
